The first Pontiac Grand Prix was introduced in 1962 and ran until 2008 with seven generations (body style changes). The first thru fourth generations were only available as a full size rear wheel drive coupe. In 1988, the fifth generation was brought out as a midsize front wheel drive car, offered as a sedan (four door) and the coupe. With the seventh and final build generation of 2004, only the sedan was available. The name plate was retired at the end of 2008 making way for the G8, only two years prior to the dissolve of the Pontiac brand as part of GM's restructuring.
