The small electric motor is attached to the regulator. When power is
applied, the motor spins a gear located on it. This gear interacts with
the larger gear style arm on the regulator, which in turn lowers or
raises the window glass attached to the regulator. Power windows are a
great feature on vehicles but can fail over time due to normal use. The
motor itself is often the leading cause of failure. The winding or
brushes within the unit can become corroded or coved in carbon. The
lifting mechanism can be at fault as well. Often the metal gears that
the motor connects to can brake or wear down. The pivot point on the
regulator arms can become worn or corroded and fatigued.
If your window is stuck in the up or down position and will not operate
there is a quick way to test your motor. Remove the interior trim panel
to gain access to the window lift. Inspect the metal lift arms for any
obvious brakes or wear. Unplug the motor and connect a 12 volt test
light (follow manufactures instructions) to the wiring harness from the
door. With the key on, push the window switch up or down until the light
turns on. This confirms that power is available from the switch to the
motor but the motor can not apply it.
